About the SMPL Phone: A Quick Start OverviewUpdated 2 months ago

The SMPL Photo Phone is a simplified, amplified telephone designed for ease of use, particularly for older adults or individuals needing accessible communication tools. Below is a summary of its key features, setup process, and usage guidance based solely on the SMPL Quick Start Guide and related support information.

Connection Requirements

  • The SMPL phone requires a standard telephone jack.

  • It does not require an electrical outlet to function.

  • It is hearing aid compatible.

How to Store a Phone Number (Photo Button Memory)

  • To program a phone number into one of the photo memory buttons:
  • Lift the handset.
  • Press and hold the desired photo button for about 3 seconds, until you hear a beep, then release the button.
  • Enter the phone number using the keypad. (Note: Add a 0 or 1 at the end to create 11 digits if needed.)
  • Press the same photo button again and release immediately. Do not hold it or wait for a beep this time.
  • Hang up the handset. The number is now saved.

⚠️ With some providers (e.g., Bell), the beep may trigger a signal instead of storing the number. In this case, program the phone in another home not using Bell service.

How to Delete or Reset Phone Numbers

To delete all numbers stored in memory (factory reset):

  • Do not lift the handset.

  • Enter the following sequence:
     * # * 0 1 * # then press the Flash button.

After the reset, you can either reprogram all photo buttons or simply overwrite an individual number by saving a new one using the steps above.

Making a Call

You have two options:

  • Pick up the handset, then press one of the six photo buttons.

  • Or, press the “dial” button for hands-free calling (note: this is a two-step procedure and not a full speakerphone function).

Speakerphone & Microphone Use

While the SMPL phone includes a hands-free option, it does not feature a full speakerphone function. The microphone is only effective within 12 inches, so users should use the handset for standard conversations.

In Residences: Dialing 9 First

If you're in a residence that requires dialing "9" to get an outside line:

  • Test the number manually first (no memory button).
  • If it works, store the number using the memory steps, but start with 9, then press Pause, and then enter the full 10-digit number.
(In some cases, a 0 or 1 may still need to be added at the end.)

Can You Program 911?

Yes. To store 911, enter: 91100000000.

Limitations

  • The SMPL phone does not support access systems (e.g., pressing "6" to open a main building door).

  • The volume must be adjusted manually for each call.

Volume Levels

  • The handset offers three volume settings, with the highest reaching +26 dB compared to average receivers.

  • The ringer volume can go up to 75–85 dB at its loudest.

Answering Machine Access with Videotron

If using Videotron's voicemail service, messages can be accessed by dialing the assigned code (e.g., *98), assuming voicemail is activated with the provider.

Reset Instructions Summary

  • To reset the phone and clear all saved numbers:
  • Do not lift the handset.
  • Quickly press: * # * 0 1 * # and then press Flash.
  • Ignore any beeps or tones, and proceed through the full sequence.
  • Hang up the handset.
This will wipe all memory and stored settings.

After resetting, reprogram photo buttons as needed using the programming steps above.
